I just read the letter to the editor by Adam Gladstone, M.D. ("Barriers to EHRs," Oct. 15, 2004, p. 8).
I am a solo ob.gyn. Four years ago, I had a staff of 12 employees--including a nurse practitioner--and a 10-by-10-foot chart room. In November of 2000, I installed an EHR, leasing all software and hardware for 4 years at $1,000 per month. The hospital hired away the nurse practitioner in February of 2001. I was able to reduce my remaining staff to four people, and there was no decrease in collections. The same amount of money came in as the previous year, when the nurse practitioner was with me.
Since then, I have seen steady 10% increases in collections (and billings). This would not be remarkable, but now I do not see patients on Fridays, whereas both the NP and I had been working 45- ...
