WASHINGTON -- Optimal nutritional support must be provided to patients undergoing bariatric surgery to reduce the risk of peripheral neuropathy, P. James B. Dyck, M.D., said at a conference for science reporters sponsored by the American Medical Association.

A retrospective review of 435 patients who had undergone bariatric surgery during 1985-2001 found that 16% went on to develop one of three types of peripheral neuropathy (PN), compared with just 3% of 126 obese patients who had cholecystectomies.
