TORONTO -- A specific polymorphic variant of the [beta]-1-adrenergic receptor influences the pharmacologic response to [beta]-receptor blockade in patients with heart failure.

In a DNA subanalysis of the Beta-Blocker Evaluation of Survival Trial (BEST), the [beta]-blocker bucindolol improved survival and decreased hospitalizations in heart failure (HF) patients with the adrenergic receptor variant known as Arg 389, compared with placebo.

In contrast, there was no therapeutic benefit from bucindolol in patients with the Gly 389 variant, lead investigator Stephen Liggett, M.D., reported at the annual meeting of the Heart Failure Society...
