Primary care physicians are becoming a growing source of revenue for hospitals.

Average annual net inpatient/outpatient revenues generated by primary care physicians (family physicians, general internists, and pediatricians) jumped from $1.27 million per physician in 2002 to almost $1.6 million in 2004, according to a survey from Merritt, Hawkins & Associates (MHA), a physician search firm based in Irving, Tex.

Referrals by primary care physicians remain an important economic engine for hospitals, Phil Miller, director of communications for MHA, said in an interview.
