AGRICULTURAL EQUIPMENT and OEM diesel manufacturer John Deere ran out its five-millionth engine at its Saran, France plant in October. The landmark motor was sent to a manufacturer of off-highway equipment in Italy. Production began in the US back in 1949.

John Deere builds Powertech engines in the 2.4-12.5 litre range; the French plant specialises in four- and six-cylinder 4.5-6.81 types which are mostly used in off-highway vehicles and gensets by manufacturers like Liebherr, Ingersoll-Rand and SDMO.
