General Ahmann was born in 1931 in Louisville, Ky., where he graduated from high school in 1949. He attended Xavier University in Cincinnati for a year, then entered the U.S. Military Academy, West Point, N.Y., and graduated in 1954 with a bachelor of science degree and a commission in the U.S. Air Force.
