Ranchers Fight Move To Deem It Threatened
The fate of the lesser prairie-chicken is about to become the stuff of greater controversy.
The New Mexico Game Commission said it is getting set to declare the chicken a "threatened" species, a move that has prompted New Mexico cattle growers to say "whoa."
The state Department of Game and Fish says it has found actually has not found a diminishing number of the chickens in their historic range along the east side of New Mexico.
A report from the department blames the decline on a common foe to birds and cows alike: drought.
And the game department says if it doesn't deem the chickens threatened, the federal government might be inclined to step in and make things harder for everybody by instituting even tougher rules for game managers and landowners.
