"Under the Grandstands," by Seymour Butts. That's the column I'd like to write someday. The other side of covering the world of prep sports. The side the reader never sees. The light side.

For some reason, road trips always seem to produce more than their share of these moments.

I couldn't resist. I called a friend back home. Told him I had an assignment in Las Vegas on Friday night. He was envious until I belatedly added two words at the end of the sentence: Las Vegas New Mexico. He laughed.

Friday night's journey to Las Vegas was a long, strange trip. The drive up was fabulous. Northbound Highway 41 has been added to my list of favorite highways. A throwback to simpler times, the road is open, uncrowded and loaded with rolling hills, the kind you used to beg your dad to drive faster over when you were a kid.
