* St. Vincent de Paul store in Mountainair is supported by donations, volunteers
Western Torrance County's Catholic churches have joined to open a Society of St. Vincent de Paul community storehouse in Mountainair to serve the surrounding area.
Donations collected in special envelopes once a month at local churches help support the store, along with money from personal contributions and bake sales. Participating churches include St. Alice in Mountainair, St. Anthony's in Torreon, St. Vincent in Punta de Agua and Our Lady of Sorrows in Manzano and Willard.
The storehouse, which opened Sept. 5, sells donated household goods, children's items and clothing at minimal prices and gives food boxes to families referred to them by churches or other organizations. Elementary school students may also receive school supplies at reduced cost when referred by a teacher.
"The whole community is involved in this effort," said chairwoman Lenora Romero. "All who help are volunteers, and we add to the food boxes with supplies from St. Vincent's in Albuquerque and Roadrunner Food Bank."
Other members of the storehouse board are vice-chairwoman Roseann Flores, secretary Carol Schwenn and treasurer Rosalia Medina. The group holds open meetings the first Friday of every month at noon in the store.
