HE BEGAN AS A WIRY SECOND baseman with a cross-handed batting style. He finished as the most prolific home run hitter in baseball history.

Although Henry Louis Aaron lacked the flair of Willie Mays, the muscle of Mickey Mantle, or the swagger of Duke Snider, he was one of the most consistent players ever to wear a major league uniform.

His amazing consistency compensated for a lack of charisma.

Aaron did everything so quietly that critics said he looked like he was falling asleep at the plate--at least until he unleashed the short, powerful stroke that produced 755 career home runs.

Unlike Mays and Mantle, Aaron never hit 50 home runs ...
