THREE PLAYERS HAVE HIT AT LEAST ONF HOME RUN IN EIGHT CONSECUTIVE GAMES IN THE major leagues. Pittsburgh Pirate Dale Long was the first to do it in 1956. Don Mattingly tied the mark in 1987 with the New York Yankees and Ken Griffey, Jr. accomplished the feat in 1993 when he was a member of the Seattle Mariners.
Long broke the record of six games, previously held jointly by Ken Williams (St. Louis Browns, 1922), Don Hurst (Philadelphia Phillies, 1929), Lou Gehrig (New York Yankees, 1931). Hurst's streak was interesting in that his only hits were the six homers.
Long broke the record off pitcher Art Flowers of the Phillies and was stopped by Dodger hurler Don Newcombe.
Mattingly hit 10 home runs during his streak before being stopped by the Minnesota Twins on July 20 in a game in which he tied the major league record with 22 putouts at first base.
Griffey, who had his first 40-homer season in 1-993, was also stopped by the Twins on July 29 after hitting a double and single in the game.
