[beta]-Blockers and thiazide diuretics appear to provide protection against osteoporosis, according to the findings of a case-control study.
In the investigation, [beta]-blockers--alone or in combination with thiazide diuretics--were associated with a significantly decreased fracture risk, said Raymond G. Schlienger, Ph.D., of the University of Basel, Switzerland, and his colleagues.
Data were derived from the UK-based General Practice Research Database (GPRD), which has enrolled more than 3 million people in the United Kingdom through their general practitioners. The researchers identified all patients (30,601) with a fracture diagnosis between January 1993 and December 1999. Patients were 30-79 years old at the time of diagnosis and were matched with up to four controls (120,819 total) for age, sex, general practice attended, and years of prior history in the GPRD. Exposure to [beta]-blockers and thiazide or thiazide-like diuretics prior to the index date was noted for both groups (JAMA 2004;292:1326-32).
