VANCOUVER, B.C. -- Treatment of hyperthyroidism in women, regardless of whether the disease is subclinical or overt, results in significantly improved bone mineral density and muscle mass, Laura J.S. Greenlund, M.D., reported at the annual meeting of the American Thyroid Association.
The observed benefits are as great in the elderly as in younger women. This suggests that recognition and correction of subclinical hyperthyroidism in the elderly may therefore be particularly important in preventing frailty and reducing vulnerability to falls and fractures, according to Dr. Greenlund of the Mayo Clinic, Rochester, Minn.
An expert panel's recently published recommendations on the treatment of subclinical thyroid disease didn't address the impact on muscle mass or bone mineral density (BMD) because of a lack of data regarding these aspects (JAMA 2004;291:228-38).
