WASHINGTON -- Physicians must work hard to ensure that only high-risk patients receive doses of the nation's now limited influenza vaccine supply, federal officials said at a press briefing.
During a hastily called meeting sparked by news that manufacturing problems would block access to as many as 48 million doses of flu vaccine, the federal Advisory Commission on Immunization Practices (ACIP) recommended that the following patients be given priority and be considered of equal importance for receiving the vaccine this season:
* Women who will be pregnant during the influenza season.
* People 65 years and older.
* Adults and children 2 years and older who have chronic heart or lung conditions, including asthma.
* Adults and children 2 years and older who needed regular medical care or were in a hospital during the previous year because of a metabolic disease, chronic kidney disease, or weakened immune system.
* All children aged 6-23 months.
