2004 NOV 22 - (NewsRx.com & NewsRx.net) -- South Carolina began expanded screening for genetic conditions in newborns November 1, 2004.
The state board of the Department of Health and Environmental Control (DHEC) decided last year to expand tests to include such disorders as cystic fibrosis and biotinidase deficiency, which can cause hearing loss and immune system disorders.
South Carolina had tested for six conditions since the 1960s.
The increased testing makes South Carolina one of seven states to test for all nine disorders recommended by the March of Dimes.
