To meet surging demand for flat panel computer displays, Corning, Inc. says it will double its worldwide capacity by the end of next year to produce active matrix liquid crystal display (AMLCD) glass substrates. The company says it has already begun to expand its facilities in Japan and Korea, and that the first unit of new capacity will come on line in January 2000, followed by additional units throughout the year. Corning will also begin construction of a new finishing facility in Taiwan, which is slated for completion in 2001.
"This announcement reinforces Corning's commitment to the liquid crystal display industry," says Peter Volanakis, the company's executive VP of advanced display products.
