LOOK UP THE DEFINITION of "driven" or "entrepreneur" in a dictionary and you might find pictures of Dayhoff LLC President Uday Lele. Small, wiry, intense and driven by a deep desire to succeed, he talks quickly, punctuating his points in the air with his hands.
Reflecting his drive, he is normally shy about discussing anything but business, but with coaxing, LELE reveals personal details of his early days in India. However, since it's nearly impossible to keep Lele from talking about business, his personal history is naturally mixed with career highlights.
"I started on the streets of Bombay," he says. "After borrowing $20 from my father to buy a briefcase, I went to work as an independent sales representative.
Lele explains that at 16 years old, being a commissioned sales rep wasn't his career plan since his father owned steel mills and iron foundries, employing 1,800 people. He admits he quite naturally expected to take over the family business, but by the time he was 18 the business was gone, destroyed by dramatic economic and political changes in India.
