Sometimes nothing breeds failure like success. That was the conundrum faced by the Maryland Athletic Club & Wellness Center, this year's Class 19 winner, as its warm-water exercise classes became ever more popular. The staff had to be careful not to over-schedule the pool to accommodate the demand. But even then, other members couldn't use the pool.
What to do? A new, 50,000-gallon adult-only pool was built with a guarantee to members that one of the warm water pools would always be open for use. It was a lesson the facility applied across the board as it worked to balance programming with individual use. For instance, yellow cones are placed at the end of lanes that are to be used for programming a full hour ahead of schedule.
