Here's a look at the experts who judged this year's contest
Ted Boyett Jr., Best University Manager in our 2003 Best of Aquatics contest, has distinguished himself as a leader and innovator, which made him the ideal choice to judge the Unversity/School category. The coordinator of Aquatics for the University of Rhode Island in Kingston, R.I., has also been honored with the National Recreation and Park Association's Excellence in Aquatics Award, University Division, and seven consecutive Top University Aquatics Program awards from the United States Water Fitness Association.
Adolph Kiefer, a member of the Aquatics International Editorial Advisory Board, runs Adolph Kiefer and Associates, a Zion, Ill., aquatic supply company. He won an Olympic gold medal in the 100-meter backstroke at the 1936 Berlin Games, and set 17 world records from 1935 to 1944. During World War II, Kiefer joined the Navy and implemented new safety guidelines and training for more than 13,000 naval swimming instructors to teach sailors combat aquatics and how to stay alive in the water. This year, he judged the University/School Category.
Alison Osinski, Ph.D., is owner of Aquatic Consulting Service in San Diego, Calif. Osinski is also heavily involved with the National Swimming Pool Foundation's Certified Pool Operator course and is a member of the organization's advisory board. This well-known industry speaker and expert witness is also a member of the Aquatics International Editorial Advisory Board. Osinski served as judge in the Public/Nonprofit Indoor Family Aquatic Center category.
Farhad Madani, former chairperson of the NRPA's National Aquatic Conference, is the Aquatic Safety Division manager at Austin Parks and Recreation Dept. in Austin, Texas. He is also the Southwest regional board member for the organization's national aquatic branch and speaks at national conferences. His city won the NRPA Excellence in Aquatics award in 1999. He judged the Public/Nonprofit Indoor Family Aquatic Center Category.
Bill Haralson is the founder and president of William L. Haralson & Associates, which specializes in feasibility studies and master planning for facilities such as waterparks and waterpark resorts. His clients include Wet n' Wild and Raging Waters. In addition, he is a frequent speaker at industry trade shows and writes regularly for several publications. This World Waterpark Association Hall of Fame member judged the Waterpark/Resort category and the Public/Nonprofit Outdoor Family Aquatic Center category.
