SAN FRANCISCO -- Approximately 40%-53% of infertile women who underwent operative laparoscopy for the treatment of tubal disease and/or endometriosis later became pregnant in a retrospective study of 393 patients.
The pregnancy rates varied by the condition treated and the operation performed, Dr. Mohammad Ashraf said at the annual meeting of the American Association of Gynecologic Laparoscopists.
The success rates make operative Laparoscopy a "highly effective" treatment for tubal factor infertility; endometriosis, or a combination of the two, said Dr. Ashraf of Flint, Mich. Physicians should consider operative laparoscopy for these indications in women younger than age 35 before resorting to in vitro fertilization with embryo transfer, especially if cost is a consideration.
