In voting against the Unborn Victims of Violence Act, Massachusetts pro-abortion Senator John Kerry, the presumptive Democratic nominee for president, continued his unrelenting anti-life record. Small wonder, then, that he was endorsed by NARAL and recipient of contributions from one of the most notorious abortionists in the United States.

Kerry both voted for a substitute amendment that would have gutted the Unborn Victims of Violence Act and against the final measure, which passed the Senate March 25 and was signed by President Bush on April 1. Once again, Sen. Kerry demonstrated how far out touch he is with mainstream America.

The Unborn Victims of Violence Act, also known as "Laci and Conner's Law," recognizes the unborn child as a second victim when he or she is killed or injured during the commission of a violent federal crime. The law specifically excludes abortion.

According to three national public opinion polls, Sen. Kerry is at odds with about 80% of the public which agrees that the deaths of Laci Peterson and her unborn son, Conner, should be treated for what they are: a double homicide. NRLC Legislative Director Douglas Johnson aptly summarized Kerry's position: "Apparently, John Kerry believes that if a criminal commits a federal crime that injures a pregnant woman and kills her unborn son or daughter, prosecutors should tell the grieving mother that she did not really lose a baby."

But Kerry's vote on the Laci and Conner Act was no aberration. It was in keeping with an absolute fidelity to the dictates of the pro-abortion lobby for nearly twenty years. Thus it came as no surprise that on March 30, NARAL endorsed Kerry's bid for president and announced an "all-out effort" to defeat pro-life President George W. Bush.

In its press release, NARAL President Kate Michelman said, "The choice for pro-choice voters is clear - - and the stakes could not be higher. If George Bush is reelected, the future of reproductive freedom is in the hands of someone who has violated women's privacy, criminalized women's medical choices and pledged to do everything in his power to restrict safe and legal abortion."

She added: "John Kerry will be a President pro-choice Americans can rely on. He ...
