Neonatal mortality in the United States declined 25% from 1989 to 2001, but racial and ethnic disparities persisted, according to data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
The rate of neonatal mortality, defined as death before 28 days of age, was more than twice as high among blacks as for any other ethnic group, suggesting that the effects of life-saving therapies and recommendations may differ among ethnic groups.
Researchers analyzed linked birth and infant death data sets for 1989-1991 and 1995-2001 from the National Center for Health Statistics.
