FORT MYERS, FLA. -- Epidural ropivacaine is showing promise for the treatment of preeclampsia and intrauterine growth restriction. Dr. Yehuda Ginosar said at the annual meeting of the Society for Obstetric Anesthesia and Perinatology.
In an ongoing randomized study of patients with both preeclampsia and intrauterine growth restriction, early results suggest antepartum chronic epidural therapy (ACET) with ropivacaine improves uteroplacental blood flow, which is impaired in both of these conditions. Treatment also appears to prolong pregnancy, said Dr. Ginosar of Hadassah Hebrew University Hospital, Jerusalem.
Of five patients at 22-32 weeks' gestation, three were randomized to receive ACET with ropivacaine and two served as controls. Optimal dosing was determined during the first 5 days of the study, with patients receiving either 0.04%, 0.06%, 0.08%, or 0.1% ropivacaine (or saline placebo) in random order.
