FORT MYERS, FLA. -- Pain during and after cesarean section was the most commonly cited concern among women in a recent survey designed to identify patient preferences regarding anesthesia.
Of 82 women surveyed, 42% listed intraoperative pain as the most undesirable outcome (median rank of 9.2 on a 1-10 scale, with 10 being the most undesirable).
And although 62% expected only mild postoperative pain, it was second on the list of undesirable outcomes (median rank of 8.6), Dr. Brendan Carvalho reported in a poster at the annual meeting of the Society for Obstetric Anesthesia and Perinatology. (See box.)
The findings contrast with those of previous surveys of the general surgical population, most of which suggest that vomiting and nausea are patients' primary postoperative concerns, said Dr. Carvalho, of the department of anesthesia at Stanford (Calif.) University.
In this survey, vomiting was the third most undesirable outcome (median rank of 7.9) and nausea was fourth (median rank of 6.7), Dr. Carvalho said.
Other areas of concern were cramping, pruritus, shivering, anxiety, and somnolence.
