THROUGH THE 2004 SEASON, THERE HAD BEEN MORE THAN 225,000 HOME runs hit in major league history, starting May 2, 1876, with Ross Barnes of the Chicago White Stockings ("straight down the left field to the carriages, for a clean home run," according to the Chicago Tribune) and ending with homers hit on October 3, 2004.
That doesn't count the 766 in the World Series, the 534 in the League Championship Series, the 308 in the Division Series--through 2003--or the 164 in the All-Star Game.
