The federal Center for Substance Abuse Treatment (CSAT) last week released two new Treatment Improvement Protocols (TIPs) addressing adolescent substance abuse, one dealing with screening and assessment and the other detailing best practices in treating the youth population.

Screening and Assessing Adolescents for Substance Use Disorders (TIP #31) describes the warning signs for substance use disorders among teens. It also details when to screen adolescents for substance use, when to seek professional assessment, and how to involve a youth's family and other associates in persuading the youth to seek treatment.
