Sixty-nine swimmers were injured at the Oststadt Swim Center in Essen, Germany, when a failure in the chlorine release mechanism caused severe over-chlorination of the pool. Of the 47 injured swimmers who were hospitalized, 40 were children, plus one pregnant woman. Victims complained of respiratory problems, coughing, skin burns, rashes and eye irritation.
