Where are they now? Former manager Chuck Tanner: one-time Pirates skipper recalls 1979 Pittsburgh club that defeated Baltimore in an exciting seven-game World Series.
TO KNOW CHUCK TANNER'S relationship with baseball all you have to know are two quotes. "The greatest thing in the world is winning a major league game," the manager of the '79 world champion Pirates said. Then Tanner, still ebullient and effervescent at 75, quickly added, "The second greatest thing in the world is to lose a major league game because that means you've had the opportunity to go against the best talent there is in the world!"
Even after being involved with professional baseball for over 58 years, Tanner still possesses the spark and love of the national pastime he did from the first time he laced on the spikes.
