Your mother was right: Breakfast really is the most important meal of the day, at least as far as reducing total food intake goes.
People who eat a higher proportion of their total daily food during the morning hours have a significantly lower total intake than those who eat more food later in the day, according to a study conducted by John M. de Castro, Ph.D., of the University of Texas at El Paso.
Dr. de Castro studied 867 individuals who completed detailed food diaries over a 7-day period. To guard against inaccurate reporting, investigators asked two individuals who ate with the participants to verify the reported intake (J. Nutr. 134[1]:104-11, 2004).
As expected, the total intake of food varied significantly throughout the day, with peaks in the morning and evening hours. Meal size increased throughout the day, while the interval between meals decreased.
