SAN DIEGO -- The prognosis for women with recurrent vulvar cancer is best for those under age 70 with late, local recurrence amenable to resection, Dr. Arnim Bader reported at the joint annual meeting of the American Urogynecologic Society and the Society of Gynecologic Surgeons.
He and his associates retrospectively reviewed the medical records of 245 women treated for vulvar cancer at Medical University of Graz, Austria, between 1961 and 1995. They undertook the study because "the relative rarity of vulvar cancer and the low proportion of recurrence have made it difficult to perform analysis for treatment of recurrent disease," said Dr. Bader of the university's department of obstetrics and gynecology.
Overall, 64 of the women (26%), median age of 72 years, developed a recurrence at a median of 11 months after primary treatment at the university.
