SALT LAKE CITY -- Childhood epilepsy is associated with several prenatal and neonatal conditions, Linda Dodds, Ph.D., said at the annual meeting of the Society for Pediatric and Perinatal Epidemiologic Research.

In a population-based cohort study, 648 cases of childhood epilepsy were identified from 124,207 live births. The children were born between January 1986 and December 2000 in Nova Scotia, and ranged in age from 1 to 15 years at follow-up, said Dr. Dodds of Dalhousie University, Halifax, N.S.

After adjustment for possible confounding variables, factors significantly associated with epilepsy included:

* Eclampsia (relative risk [RR] 12.9).

* Neonatal seizures (RR 11.3).

* Central nervous system anomalies (RR 3.5).

* Placental abruption (RR 2.4).
