PHOENIX, ARIZ. -- Repeat second-trimester ultrasound exams performed in a tertiary care center over a 4-month period did not increase the detection rate of fetal anomalies, Dr. Marguerite Lisa Bartholomew reported in a poster session at the annual meeting of the American Institute of Ultrasound in Medicine.
She and her associates conducted a retrospective review of 1,470 second-trimester ultrasounds performed on 1,344 fetuses during a 4-month period. They reviewed ultrasound reports to determine if repeat studies resulted in a change of diagnosis with respect to fetal anomalies. They also compared ultrasound diagnoses with new born patient records to determine the accuracy of the ultrasound diagnoses.
