The Tech Talk article in the June issue about zeolite filtration was quite interesting and informative, but it did have a few points that I think need clarification.
The author states that "most clinoptilolite is mined with lots of embedded fine clay." Clay is a mineralogical term. Zeolite media does not contain clay. I believe the author intended to say that zeolite media contains a lot of fine zeolite dust that must be backwashed out before media is serviceable. This is true. Zeolite dust is present because the zeolite mineral ore is in a massive "rock-like" formation that must be blasted, crushed and screened to the proper granular size. Zeolite dust is embedded in the pore spaces of each granule and must be washed out before the media is ready to filter. Zeolite manufacturers generally recommend:
* Backwashing after media installation until the sight glass is clear
* A brief rinse
* Shut the filter off and allow the bed to settle for a couple of minutes, then repeat the first two steps.
