BILL WERBER LIVES IN A RETIREMENT HOME IN Charlotte, North Carolina, likes to send right-wing letters to left-wing publications and still chuckles about how he used to get the better of Babe Ruth and Lou Gehrig in the early days of his career.
The game wasn't baseball. It was bridge, Ruth and Gehrig forming one team, Werber and Bill Dickey the other.
"We used to beat them all the time," Werber says.
Bill Werber turned 96 in June. He lost part of his left leg to diabetes a few years ago. He lost his beloved wife of 70 years, Kathryn, not long after, and cried when he left flowers on her grave on the anniversary of her passing.
