CHAIR OF the Health Select Committee and MP for Rotorua Steve Chadwick began conference's second day with a speech giving the Government's perspective on the conference theme "Developing professional activism".

Chadwick is a nurse and midwife, a founding member of the New Zealand College of Midwives, a representative for NZNA from 1976-1986 and a former member of the National Student Unit. "Developing professional activism is part of my history," she said.

Chadwick acknowledged the work and achievements of NZNO over many years, both industrially and professionally. Comparing the activities of NZNA to NZNO's current campaigns, she said: "You are more politically active today. You grab the right issues."
