In a prospective study of 106,379 Norwegian and Swedish women, the number of large asymmetric nevi on the legs was the single greatest host risk factor for melanoma, Dr. Marit Bragelien Veierod and associates reported.

Blond or red hair color, greater body surface area, and sunburns in the second through fourth decades of life were other significant risk factors.
