PHILADELPHIA -- Labial adhesions in prepubertal girls were successfully treated with topical estrogen without the need for surgery in a series of 36 patients at a single center.
"Manual separation after thinning with estrogen cream is an excellent method for expediting resolution," Dr. Jane E. Dopkin said at a poster session at the annual meeting of the North American Society for Pediatric and Adolescent Gynecology.
The patient series re viewed by Dr. Dopkin and her associates included gifts who were diagnosed with labial adhesion from September 1999 to September 2002 at Cincinnati Children's Hospital Medical Center. The average age of the gifts was 4.8 years, with a range of 3 months to 11 years. At the time of referral, 44% of the gifts had a first episode; the rest had a history of adhesions. A total of 22% had symptoms, including dysuria, vulvar itching, odor, and discharge. Primary care providers had diagnosed 81% of the patients, and 75% had been treated with topical estrogen before referral.
