NEW ORLEANS -- Premenopausal women with type 1 diabetes have lower bone mineral density than do nondiabetic women, Dr. Elsa Strotmeyer said at the annual scientific sessions of the American Diabetes Association.
The finding is of concern because every one standard deviation decrease in bone mineral density (BMD) corresponds to a twofold hip fracture increase, said Dr. Strotmeyer of the University of Pittsburgh.
In a study comparing 60 premenopausal women (aged 35-55 years) with type 1 diabetes and 144 healthy controls, the diabetic women were slightly younger on average (43 vs. 46 years) and were less likely to use hormones (13% vs. 26%).
