PHILADELPHIA -- Walking at a brisk pace increased bone mineral density while a slower or moderate pace was negatively correlated with a change in BMD, in a study of postmenopausal women.
"BMD increased at intensities above 110% of ventilatory threshold and de creased at intensities below 110%. In effect, a brisk walk 5 days a week over a 15week period was helpful for a postmenopausal woman's BMD, and a slower, less challenging one was not," said Katarina Borer, Ph.D., of the Center for Exercise Research at the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor.
Ventilatory threshold is the speed of exercise at which people start hyperventilating or get winded, Dr. Borer explained at the annual meeting of the Endocrine Society.
"Our study contributes to the ongoing effort to learn which forms of exercise and intensities can assist in increasing BMD in postmenopausal women," she said.
The study also analyzed two markers of bone formation--osteocalcin (OC), a biomarker of osteoblast ...
