SAN FRANCISCO -- Close to 90% of Dr. William M. Gilbert's pregnant patients comply with his request that they record fetal kick counts starting at 28 weeks' gestation.
How does he get so many women to keep track of fetal kicks every day? By telling them that nonrandomized studies have shown that counting and recording fetal kicks every day and bringing the report to their physician can reduce the risk of stillbirth by 70% in low-risk women, he said at a meeting on antepartum and intrapartum management sponsored by the University of California, San Francisco.
The maternal and fetal histories play important roles in interpreting fetal heart rate tracings, so he asks all his pregnant patients to record daily fetal kick counts.
