PHILADELPHIA -- Acetaminophen and pseudoephedrine were the two medications that pregnant women and other concerned callers inquired about most frequently with regard to safety of use in pregnancy, in a study of more than 9,000 inquiries made to 17 teratology information services in North America.
In addition, 5 of the top 10 medications mentioned were antidepressants, and only 3 of the top 40 had a pregnancy category D designation, reported Robert Felix, teratogen information specialist at the California Teratogen Information Service, University of California, San Diego.
"Women commonly use several agents over the course of a pregnancy, yet many [medication labels] do not provide teratogenic information. Our study suggests that there is a considerable public demand for teratogen information and risk assessment," he said at the annual meeting of the Teratology Society.
