Variola has joined the politically correct list of conditions--along with herpes, AIDS, and now SARS--that keep us off balance and in fear. The last case in the United States was in 1949, and the last in the world was in Somalia in 1977. There were holdover vaccinations in the United States until 1972, and in that time there were no cases of smallpox but 300 deaths from the vaccine.
