ATLANTA -- One more reason for women to quit smoking is to decrease their risk of gestational diabetes.
In a subgroup analysis of the larger Calcium for Pre-Eclampsia Prevention study conducted in five U.S. medical centers in 1992-1995, 3,774 nulliparous women were screened for gestational diabetes using a 1-hour, 50-g oral glucose challenge. Those whose plasma glucose levels exceeded 140 mg/dL underwent a 3-hour, 100-g oral glucose tolerance test, Dr. Lucinda J. England said at the annual meeting of the Society for Pediatric and Perinatal Epidemiologic Research.
Smoking history was obtained at study enrollment, which took place between weeks 13 and 21 of gestation. The association between smoking and gestational diabetes was assessed using logistic regression, adjusting for maternal age, race, and body mass index.
