SUPER STARDOM IS NO GUARANTEE of World Series success, as many great players, including Ted Williams, Rogers Hornsby, Ty Cobb and even Babe Ruth, on occasion, have discovered to their mortification.

A player, no matter how good, is almost as likely to flop as to grasp the hero's laurels. And in what is a relatively brief span of seven games at the most, there's little opportunity to recover from an untimely slump.

An outstanding career or an exceptional regular season has never assured anyone of superior performance in the Fall Classic, and is unlikely to do so this year's duel of league champions.
