SAN FRANCISCO -- Adding soy nuts to a low-fat diet cut the number of hot flashes in postmenopausal women; the effect was amplified in women who exercised more than 276 minutes per week, Stacey E. Panagotopulos, Ph.D., reported in a poster session at a conference on arteriosclerosis, thrombosis, and vascular biology sponsored by the American Heart Association.
Among women who experienced an average of more than 4.5 hot flashes per day at baseline, those who exercised 40 minutes or more each day recorded a 49% average reduction in hot flashes when soy was added to their diet. Those who exercised only 30-90 minutes per week recorded a 26.5% average reduction.
