I read Dr. Thomas Lyons' Master Class column and would say that the future of gynecologic surgery will certainly involve much more laparoscopy ("Laparoscopic Supracervical Hysterectomy: A Procedure Whose Time Has Come," June 1, 2004, p. 42).
To minimize criticism, I would suggest we limit our comments on the benefits of laparoscopy to what has been scientifically proved. That said, there is no evidence clearly showing the benefits of supracervical over traditional total hysterectomy--laparoscopic or otherwise.
To claim these benefits weakens Dr. Lyons' credibility on the subject of LSH and weakens his justification for performing the procedure.
