SEOUL, Aug. 11 (Xinhua) -- South Korean Prime Minister Lee Hai- chan on Wednesday announced the location for the country's new administrative capital, capping days of disputes over the controversial relocation issue.
The new administrative capital will be built in Yeongi-Gongju region in South Chungcheong Province, some 160 kilometers south of Seoul, the Prime Minister announced. Yeongi-Gongju region covers an area of 70.28 million square meters.
"The region is rated outstanding in terms of balanced national development, access from inside and outside the country, the environmental impact and favorable natural conditions," said Lee. The Presidential Committee for Administrative Capital Relocation in June selected four candidate sites: Jincheon-Eumsung, Chonan city, Yeongi-Gongju, and Gongju- Nonsan. Then Yeongi-Gongju defeated other candidates in an evaluation and was named as the most favorite candidate for the new capital.
President Roh Moo-hyun promised to shift Seoul's administrative capital function to another place so as to realize balanced regional development when he campaigned for the 2002 presidential election.
He said that Seoul and its vicinity areas almost hold half of the country's some 47 million population and contribute too much to the nation's economy, which is not good for balanced development of the whole country.
