CHICAGO -- Federal efforts to acquire private medical records of patients, including those who have had miscarriages or abortions, were opposed in a resolution approved by the House of Delegates of the American Medical Association at its 2004 annual meeting.
The resolution calls on the AMA to convey to the administration and the Justice Department its concerns about subpoenas spurred by pending litigation that would compel hospitals to disclose the medical records of women who have had second-trimester abortion procedures.
In addition, the delegates affirmed existing AMA policy on a patient's right to privacy in the termination of pregnancy.
