HERE ARE A FEW PLAYS FROM THE 2003 season that piqued my imagination a bit.
APRIL 18: In the top of the first inning of the Yankees-Twins game at Minnesota, Bernie Williams stole second base with two outs. The ball beat Bernie to the bag, as did the tag. Normally this would be a slam-dunk out call but second baseman Luis Rivas' glove came off with the ball in it as Bernie's spikes rested against it. He was called safe since Rivas did not secure possession of the ball in his glove when applying the tag.
APRIL 27: The Red Sox-Angels game at Anaheim created further proof that baseball could benefit from the use of the instant replay camera on long distance calls involving home runs (fair or foul) or fan interference situations.
In the bottom of the seventh, Scott Spiezio hit a shot to right field off Pedro Martinez that was ruled a home run by second base umpire Joe West. Red Sox skipper Grady Little argued that a fan reached over the wall and interfered and that the ball never left the playing field. ESPN announcer Joe Morgan agreed. The umps conferred but the call stood.
MAY 1: In the first game of a doubleheader between the Orioles and Tigers at Detroit, Baltimore's BJ. Ryan was declared the winning pitcher without throwing a pitch. Ryan came out of the bullpen with two outs in the seventh inning to relieve Pat Hentgen and proceeded to pick off Omar Infante at first base.
Trailing 2-1 at the time, the Birds scored three in the top of the eighth making Ryan the pitcher of record. Buddy Groom and Jorge Julio pitched the eighth and ninth innings but Ryan was credited with the victory without throwing a pitch since he was the pitcher of record when the Orioles took the lead.
MAY 11: Mother Nature took away 20 runs including seven home runs in the Cardinals-Cubs game at Chicago. In the top of the fifth inning, the Cards led 11-9 when the game was halted by rain and called after a 64-minute delay. It wasn't an official game since the home team trailed before completing its at-bat in the bottom of the fifth, therefore negating the day's offensive explosion.
