SANTIAGO, CHILE -- The majority of women with oliguria from preeclampsia benefited from human serum albumin in a study presented at the FIGO World Congress of Gynecology and Obstetrics.
There is no consensus in the literature regarding the cause of oliguria in preeclampsia. Dr. Sara Diaz and her col leagues in the study proposed that stretch receptors in pulmonary veins release hypovolemia-mediated signals and trigger maximal secretion of antidiuretic hormone. To test their theory, they reviewed the records of 46 women with preeclampsia.
"Treatment in our institution is aimed at correction of hypoxia of the trophoblast by expansion of blood volume," said Dr. Diaz, a researcher in the department of obstetrics and gynecology at the University of Puerto Rico, San Juan.
Previous reports demonstrated that an intravenous infusion of human serum albumin normalizes blood volume and viscosity in women with preeclampsia.
The studies also showed albumin reduces blood pressure by an average of 60 mm Hg systolic and 40 mm Hg diastolic. Participants in the current study were 15-31 years old. They ...
